First there was Bombay Velvet, now there is Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and then there will be Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanjay Dutt biopic. The common factor between all the three mentioned above is the pairing of Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. Yes, as per latest reports Anushka Sharma will be joining Ranbir Kapoor, for the third time, in Sanjay Duttbiopic, though this time only in a cameo. She’ll will be essaying the role of a scribe in the film. Since its inceptions there have been huge speculations about the leading ladies in the film and one name that has been making the rounds was that of Anushka Sharma’s. After working with Rajkumar Hirani in Indian cinema’s biggest box office hit PK, there were reports that she’d be playing either the character of Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt’s girlfriend, once upon a time or Manyata Dutt, Sanjay Dutt’s wife. But a source close to the film told Mumbai Mirror, “Anushka is not playing Manyata or even any of Sanjay’s love interest. It’s a cameo appearance, she will be seen as a scribe/biographer who chronicles Sanjay’s life in the film.” When Rajkumar Hirani was asked about the same via text message he was unavailable for comment. His spokesperson confirmed the news without divulging any further details.
The much awaited biopic is in news since it was announced and the excitement went sky high when Ranbir Kapoor’s name was revealed to be in the film as the main lead. He will be seen essaying the character of Sanjay Dutt. Since his debut in Rocky, Sanjay Dutt’s life has been one roller coaster ride, be it his tryst with drug addiction, his various love affairs, his various marriages or the biggest of them all, his alleged involvement in 1993 Bombay bomb blasts. Sanjay Dutt was convicted for illegal possesion of arms and was sentenced to five years in jail. Later this year on February 25 he walked out as a free man and to receive him, apart from other family members, was his friend and director Rajkumar Hirani who documented the scene of his real life release for his biopic.
The film will finally be going on floors in January next year, earlier their were reports of the film being delayed due to Sanjay Dutt’s involvement as he wanted the script tweaked. Dutt however, refuted all the rumors saying, “The dates are sorted but Raju is still writing. He has nine hundred hours of recorded coversations with me from which he has to cull out a two-and-a-half-hour film.”
It’ll also be interesting to see Ranbir Kapoor playing this layered character of Sanjay Dutt, the role has the scope to churn out career best performance from Ranbir Kapoor. And, we all know he is capable of that (see Tamasha and Rockstar). With Rajkumar Hirani, the man with the midas touch helming the film, this film is one of the most awaited for next year. We are eagerly waiting for the makers to announce the rest of the cast.
